alcedoXTS offers services in the areas of system specification and facility design/operation for high-end computing.
This also includes preparation of business plans to funding agencies for support, and appropriate contribution to proposals to obtain funding. “High-end computing” here refers to any activity that cannot be met by the user’s own, departmental, or institutional facilities. This includes both traditional high-performance computing at petascale and higher, but also data-intensive computing with multi-terabyte memory needs and exascale data sets. alcedoXTS has no vested interest in dedicated facilities vs cloud provision, nor in particular vendors. We offer an external perspective on what is best for a particular client, focussing on total cost of ownership to meet the client’s needs.
In applications areas alcedoXTS consultants can provide advice on computational approaches to problems in a variety of disciplines, including theoretical and computational chemistry, computational biology, materials science, and mathematical physics, plus aspects of computational mathematics.
Such advice can range from which software packages to use (and on what hardware — see above) to how to structure an appropriate and reliable set of calculations. We can also undertake to run the calculations ourselves (using the client’s resources) but this is of little long-term benefit to the client because it develops no client-side expertise. Although alcedoXTS consultants have made contributions to certain software packages in the past, should there be any potential conflict this will be declared to the client. In any event, our consultants’ contributions to these packages are completely unremunerated and alcedoXTS has no financial stake in any software packages nor in any vendors.
We can offer training in small groups or larger workshops, from half-day sessions to residential meetings, on the various systems and application areas described above. Course materials will be made available to participants and (personnel resources permitting) we can undertake to organize the scheduling and location of such training ourselves, although normally this task would fall to the client.
